Courtesy basically means thinking of others before thinking of yourself. Courtesy in the dojo is an important part of the martial arts because it creates a harmonious atmosphere and is an excellent means of self-improvement. While in the dojo do not forget to:

*Kneel and bow to the "Shomen" when entering or leaving. This shows your respect and appreciation of the martial arts.

*Bow to the teacher (sensei) before and after practice, and whenever he or she instructs you personally. Thank him;her for their kindness.

*Kneel and maintain a straight position when the teacher is demonstrating to the class. This is difficult for long periods of time but if you concentrate on the teaching rather than on your cramped muscles you will not be aware of any pain. Remember that the teacher has had to do the same in the past.

*Show respect for your partner by bowing and thanking him/her for practicing with you. Remember at all times that you are practicing with them for mutual self improvement and that, regardless of rank, you should be able to learn something from them. During practice do not resist as it will hurt both of you and you will be developing bad technique as a result. The dojo is not a fight area but rather a place to learn and practice.
