Terminology of Style Defined
Yoshimi=friendship
Shin=heart
Ki=energy
Ryugi=system
Physical Training
The sequence of instruction begins with exercises to condition the body and mind to learn the basics: Rolls and Falls (Sutemi),
Hand Arts (Yawara), Throws (Nage), Hold Downs (Osaekomi), Strangles (Shime), Combination Arts (Oku), and Submission &
Killing Arts (Shinin No Maki). The above techniques are arranged and taught in a formalized manner to aid learning.
Moral Training
This is developed through precept and example in class instruction, exemplifying the Dojo's Codes of Conduct, demonstration,
and examination.
Mental Training
By cultivating a relaxed mirror-like state of mind (Mu-Shin) without preconceived ideas or thoughts (Mu-Nin), the student
learns to react spontaneously. One must realize that JuJitsu is more than a fighting skill---it is a mental discipline from
which one must learn the value of kindness and sincerity to others. To become an expert the student must develop self control
as well as mastery of the techniques of the Art.
Some people think that when they enter into JuJitsu that the Sensei will give them superior power and secrets which will enable
them after a short time to beat anyone and become sort of a "superman". Honestly, JuJitsu can "give" you
nothing! All that a teacher can do is point the way to those who really want to make progress and eventually draw out the
real strength that is in you and reveal you to yourself-this is the real "superman" power.
Nobody can attain compete mastery of his/her mental, physical, and spiritual capabilities therefore it is necessary to
continue to practice throughout your life whatever your age, state of health, or family/social status.
Class Structure

 |
|
In general, classes last 2 to 3 hours and we train in two segments. The first segment consists of group activities which
always includes warm-ups followed by some combination of ukemi waza (break-falling and rolling), basic karate drills, and
throwing exercises. To assist you, an instructor or senior student will ofter wander through the class and offer constructive
comments.
For the last segment of the class, we split into several groups according to rank and skill level. During this time, we
work on our "boards" or any other belt level requirements. The training is based on simulating realistic encounters
one might find on the street and this process consists of one attacker, the uke, attacking the other person, the tori, so
we usually work in pairs or groups of three or four.
All students (except white belts) spend a significant amount of time teaching those of lower rank. This not only gives
everyone more individual attention but, by having to teach, students develop a much deeper understanding of each technique's
subtleties.
Schedule
Classes are currently held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:45pm-9:30pm at Four Dragons Martial Arts in Watkins Glen,
NY. Call Professor Mike for additional information and to schedule an interview.

Godan Ryuu Jujitsu classes have a casual and relaxed atmosphere, yet we do adhere to some basic Japanese martial arts traditions
beyond the wearing of a gi. Respect for our art, lineage, dojo, instructor, and fellow jujitsuka is to be shown at all times
not only while in classes but outside of class as well, Students who disregard our traditions will be dismissed.
Students should bow when entering or leaving the dojo and the mat area and when greeting or changing partners during drills.
Before and after class, students line up by rank to formally bow in/out.
Instructors and Black Belts should be acknowledged by their title and name or "sir" or "m'am" when
appropriate.
